Is this you?
How I wish I can earn from writing, but my English language is not perfect. So I cannot start a profitable writing career
My wish is to write like you and earn from writing
I love writing, but I don’t know how to earn from it
These are messages I receive daily from my friend list, and I wish they know how it all began for me. Many of you thought I just woke up to earn from writing. Meanwhile, you are in a better position than I was when I started.
As I have told many of my students, if you can pass with D’s in your school exams, you are too good to start a successful writing career. Thus, once you put your mind to it, everything else becomes a rollercoaster for you to build a profitable writing business.
Meanwhile, you may know how lucrative is writing, but knowing where to start, how to start, and who will hire you to write for them becomes problematic. Therefore, in this post, I will show you the strategies to start a writing career.
Here are 5 things you must seriously consider to have a successful and profitable writing career
Understand your why
I started freelancing some years ago, but I went AWOL for a while after encountering an obstacle in writing – scammed by a client. At that point, I left writing until the end of 2019, when I needed to have something doing after my college degree.
Understanding your why is essential to start a profitable wiring career. When you meet obstacles along your path, your solid reasons for starting will push and motivate you to keep going. Are you starting to become an author? Do you want to write for the fame of it? Do you want to be a full-time writer and make money from it? Answering those questions will set your path.
Many of my students have complained about obstacles they encounter on their path; some even want to pursue other goals as they thought writing is not for them. All I recommended for them is to know why they are interested in writing in the first place.
Do thorough research.
After you have established a strong why to become a successful writer, you need thorough research to know your expectations. Writing is a broad term, and it encompasses every aspect of putting pen on paper or typing on your keyboard. Therefore, you need to know what aspect and niche of writing you want to master and become successful.
Here are some of the profitable writing niches
- E-book writing
- Copywriting
- Content writing
- Blog writing
- Ghostwriting
- Freelance writing
- Fiction writing
Knowing which niche and what you want to write is the second step to start a profitable writing career.
Be ready to read and research
You see, if you are lazy, writing is not for you. If readers are leaders, trust me, writers are gods. You can never be a successful writer if you don’t like to read. I have heard stories of ‘I don’t like reading’ but ‘I write.’ You write craps.
To be a successful writer, you need to love reading. You need to read your previous works, read works of your superiors and competitors, read current news and stories, and read to know before you read to write. When you read while writing and your writing niche may require you to do prior research, knowing how to research will set you on a path to a successful writing career.
Have a mentor to start a profitable writing career
In poetry, I have mentors; in content writing and SEO, I have numerous mentors. Even in social media writing, I have mentors. Your mentors are the leader you climb to your success. The mentors have made mistakes, have figured things out painfully, and have achieved success through their experience. Lean on them to shorten your learning curve.
Allex Catoni, Dan Lock, Neil Patel, Godwin Oluponmile, and others are my mentors in copywriting and SEO.
Start building your online presence.
I have gotten numerous gigs on social media than I get from freelancing platforms because I do not hesitate to let the world know what I do. Once I am discussing with you for more than a minute, I let my writing career in.
Your Facebook page, your LinkedIn, and other media you use should be your CV. Coming in contact with your page should announce you as a successful writer. If your media presence reveals a different identity, trust me, your writing career will nosedive. Writing is not what you keep secret; let everyone knows you can dazzle the world with your pen.
